Taylor Patterson

Firm History

Taylor Patterson Group Ltd

Nigel Taylor and John Patterson first met in 1970 when employed by Stenhouse PLC, a major international insurance brokers now part of the AON Group.

Taylor Patterson Associates Ltd (TPA)

In January 1979 Nigel left Stenhouse to establish TPA and was followed closely by John in May of that year. The business began trading in offices above a shop in Kirkham and moved shortly afterwards to the business area of Winckley Square, Preston.

As the business expanded the Company moved to larger premises in 1983 and then purchased office premises 25b Winckley Square in 1987 followed by the purchase of the present office Lanson House, Winckley Gardens in 1989.

To progress the business in the early years a number of joint ventures were established with professional firms.

1981 - Taylor Patterson Insurance Services Ltd (TPIS)

A Company was established to develop general insurance services for the clients of TPA. This was done initially with the support of a business client using their general insurance account as a base. This was supplemented by the purchase of a number of small brokers and the general insurance accounts from professional firms.

1993 - Taylor Patterson Green Ltd

Clients of Nigel included the estate agency businesses of J Entwistle & Co of St.Annes and Haworth & Green of Preston. These firms merged to form Entwistle Green. A joint company as established with TPA to provide mortgage and insurance services to house buyers. This was achieved by Entwistle Green acquiring 50% of TPIS changing the name of this Company to Taylor Patterson Green Ltd (TPG).

The venture progressed well but Entwistle Green was eventually sold to Lloyds Bank -Black Horse Agencies creating a new business Entwistle Green Black Horse.

As TPA did not wish to become part of the larger organisation the general insurance interests of TPG were brought in-house to TPA as a department.

After a period many of the directors of Entwistle Green Black Horse broke away and re-established local estate agency businesses. Many of these are still clients of TPA today.

1985-87 - Taylor Patterson Lonsdale Ltd (TPL)

During this period a number of joint ventures were established with accountancy firms. Some of these were on a sub-agency basis that still exist and some were on a more formal basis in a joint company. Lonsdale & Partners based in Lancaster were a part of Thornton Baker, now Grant Thornton and broke away to form an independent practice in South Lakeland. As Thornton Baker were the accountants to TPA the partners of Lonsdales were well known to Nigel and John and as a result a joint company was formed to develop financial services in Cumbria. This progressed very well and was a successful venture but Lonsdales wanted to develop this under their own name. The interest of TPA was purchased by Lonsdales in 1990 and a continuing relationship was maintained, particularly with SSAS clients.

1991 - Taylor Patterson Insurance Services Ltd (TPIS)

As part of complex regulation of general insurance TPIS was reformed as a subsidiary company of TPA and registered with the IBRC. A new director was employed and provision was made for him to acquire minority shareholding. This did not prove a major success so Nigel and John purchased all of the shares from the director followed by those held by TPA. The Company continued as an associated company until 2003.

2003 - Taylor Patterson Group Ltd (TPG)
Taylor Patterson Financial Planning Ltd (TPFP)

As part of the continuing expansion of the business and the varying requirements of the current regulators, the FSA, TPA was restructured as a group of companies. TPIS was incorporated within the new group and a new company was formed to specialise in financial planning - TPFP.

The formation of the group provided a structure to develop a management team with a view to planning the future continuity of the business.

2004 Taylor Patterson Group Ltd

New Shareholding

As part of the long term plans for continuity, the management team consisting of Gillian Bardin, Glynn Bartley, Robert Cholmondeley and Phil Rogers were provided the opportunity of acquiring a shareholding in TPG. They acquired a minority holding in August 2004 with options to eventually gain full control in the future.

Nigel and John are confident that they have both created the right formula and the right team to see the Company into the future. There will no doubt be many changes to come and many new faces to appear but the ultimate goal is to ensure that the Group and the services initially started by Nigel and John in 1979 continue into the future.
