As an employer, which employees do I have to auto enrol into a workplace pension scheme?

Employees must be auto enrolled in a qualifying pension scheme if they meet the following conditions:

  • They are not already in a qualifying workplace pension scheme;
  • They are aged between 22 and State Pension age;
  • They earn more than the minimum earnings threshold (£10,000 a year, £833 a month, £192 a week in 2016-17); and
  • They work or usually work in the UK.

If an employee does not meet the auto enrolment criteria above, and are aged between 16 and 75, they can still opt to join the scheme if they wish.
